Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 2025
At IREN, we believe that trust is the foundation of an inclusive community. This Privacy Policy is designed to be transparent, easy to understand, and respectful of your privacy. We are committed to protecting your personal information and ensuring that every member of our community — students, parents, teachers, and schools — feels safe and valued.
1 Information We Collect
To build a supportive and inclusive learning community, we collect information that helps us serve you better. This includes:
- Account Information: Name, email address, phone number, and password when you register as a Parent, Teacher, Headteacher, or Community Member.
- Student Data: Academic performance, attendance records, enrolled subjects, and learning progress — carefully managed by the school to support each student's unique journey.
- Community Content: Stories, comments, and event participation you choose to share with the IREN community.
- Device & Usage Data: Log files, IP addresses, browser type, pages visited, and interactions with the IREN platform — used only to improve your experience.
- Order & Payment Information: Billing address, order history, and transaction references when purchasing IREN products or subscriptions.
- Communication Data: Messages you send through our support channels, contact forms, or community discussions.
2 How We Use Your Information
We use your information thoughtfully and respectfully to nurture our inclusive community:
- To provide, operate, and improve the IREN platform and assistive technology services for all learners.
- To manage accounts, process orders, and deliver subscriptions to schools, families, and community partners.
- To send OTP codes and security notifications to keep your account safe and secure.
- To share community stories, event invitations, educational resources, and platform updates that may inspire and support you.
- To foster connections within our community by highlighting shared experiences and achievements.
- To monitor platform performance and resolve technical issues promptly.
- To comply with applicable laws and regulations in a transparent and ethical manner.
3 How Schools and Parents Enrol
School Enrolment
- Schools are welcomed into our community through Porto Limited.
- A Headteacher account is created and the school is assigned a unique identifier.
- The Headteacher adds teachers and students through the school management dashboard.
- Subscription plans are activated upon confirmation of payment.
- IREN devices are registered to the school and linked to teachers who upload and manage educational content.
- Schools become part of the wider IREN community, with opportunities to share stories and participate in events.
Parent & Community Enrolment
- Parents and community members register independently at iren.porto.africa/parents/signup/.
- A valid email address and phone number are required to complete registration.
- After registration, parents can subscribe to an IREN family plan.
- Parents can track their child's learning progress and receive reports through the platform.
- Community members can engage with stories, attend events, and connect with other families.
4 Data Sharing and Disclosure
Your trust matters to us. We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to anyone. We only share data in limited, respectful circumstances:
- Within the school: Student data is accessible to the assigned Headteacher and Teachers of that school only — to support the student's learning journey.
- Community Features: When you choose to share stories or comment on community content, your name and shared content will be visible to other community members as intended.
- Service Providers: We use trusted third-party services (e.g., SMS gateways, email providers) solely to operate our platform securely.
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our community members.
5 Data Security
Protecting our community's information is a responsibility we take seriously. We apply thoughtful technical and organisational measures, including:
- Hashed and salted passwords — plain-text passwords are never stored.
- One-time passwords (OTP) for identity verification during authentication and password recovery.
- HTTPS encryption for all data transmitted between your device and our servers.
- Role-based access controls that limit data visibility to authorised personnel only.
- Regular security reviews to keep our community safe.
While no method of electronic transmission or storage is entirely risk-free, we are continuously working to improve. We encourage everyone in our community to use strong, unique passwords and to reach out to us promptly if they notice anything unusual.
6 Children's Privacy
IREN proudly serves students of all ages, including minors. We treat children's data with extra care and respect. Student data is managed solely by the school (Headteacher and Teachers) and is never used for advertising or shared with third parties for marketing. Parents may request access to their child's data by contacting us or their school directly at any time. We are here to support every family in our community.
7 Your Rights
We believe you should always have control over your personal information. As a valued member of our community, you have the right to:
- Access, update, or delete your personal account information at any time from your profile.
- Request a copy of data we hold about you by contacting iren@porto.africa.
- Withdraw consent for marketing communications at any time — no hard feelings.
- Request deletion of your account by contacting our friendly support team.
- Choose what community content (stories, comments) you wish to share or remove.
